The Great and Terrible Airstrike

DAILY REVELATION- Sunday, May 23rd. "HORROR!" "Oh, how our land and her people weep! Endor, the great city of towers, capital of our nation, has been reduced nearly to rubble by her wicked enemy, the grand and endlessly fearsome land of Carcosa, whose demonic Scarlet Army is ever to be reviled by those in its path. In the dead of night, they came upon the city in their great dirigibles; they, cowards that they are, dropped their shells in dreadful silence, and the city was fully alight within seconds. Tens of thousands of our dear fellow citizens were either incinerated instantly or else remain buried in agony under the cruelly-fashioned ruins. Only one enemy dirigible was taken down by defensive forces- a humble victory, but a noble one, nonetheless, considering the overwhelming surprise of the attack. Only a small percentage of Endor escaped destruction. Two of the greatest cathedrals, having suffered the least damage, have been hastily transformed into temporary infirmaries for the many injured. "Fellow citizens- may this horrific tragedy galvanize you to action! Grim Carcosa and their Scarlet Army, diabolic, godless beasts that they are, must accept their comeuppance! Too many innocent souls have been lost in the path of their vicious war machine- its path is lined in blood!" NATIONAL MIRROR- Sunday, May 23rd. "VICTORY FROM THE SKIES." "Yes, friends, the battle is ours- our brave and noble forces in the skys have succeeded yet again! Our vile enemy, Whose name need not even be mentioned here, has been dealt a violent blow through the destruction of its capital city- the very source of its depraved wickedness. Our grand defender, the Scarlet Army, is to be greatly admired for both its chivalry and fortitude. Through the battle, only one airship was lost (it is with the deepest sympathies, of course, that we must report the noble deaths of the twenty-three soldiers on board- their sacrifice, of course, is not to be thought in vain). "Friends! Complete victory is close at hand! Our loathsome enemy, whose perpetrated horrors are well-known enough, shall not rise again against us. The scarlet Army has obliterated their nerve center, and paralyzed their evil pursuits at the source." --------------War is such an awful thing, dear reader- but I suppose you already know that. What's the point of it all- defending nations? Saving others (from themselves)? Perhaps I cannot rightly say; I'm just a young, rebellious illustrator, and my opinions are hardly objective. While some wars, no doubt, are necessary to protect one's home (or, perhaps, the beliefs and values of that home), that hardly seems to make it all alright. Why do humans destroy their own species so readily? It's terribly unproductive and, from a biological standpoint, purely contradictory to most lifeforms, whose main concern is increasing their numbers, not purposely decreasing them. Anyway- those would be some of the thoughts following this newest piece of mine. A beautiful city is being swiftly destroyed by its enemy. Each side has its own story afterwards, and each side believes its version of events is correct (it has been said, and I strongly agree, that no side during a war believes itself to be the "bad" one. They all believe that what they do is perfectly just, and that those that disagree are wrong). Really, though, this piece shows a third view. Two soldiers (or, more exactly, one soldier and one medic) watch in quiet terror as the city before them falls to the ground. Worse yet, it is their own army committing the action! They're draftees, of course- and less than supportive of their nation's actions. They prove both sides wrong- on the one hand, they are clearly aware that the Scarlet Army's actions are nothing short of terrorism, and on the other hand, they show that (contrary to what the Daily Revelation reports) the opposing forces are not entirely evil. Rather, many of them (including the couple above) are really only doing what they are told, facing prison or (depending on how draconian Carcosa is) death if they do not comply. Or something like that. It's all fairly complex, you see, and a bit difficult to explain fully
